Gostilje Waterfall – A day trip to a Zlatibor oasis of silence and freshness
Springtime in Zlatibor can truly surprise you. While many associate this mountain with crowds in the town center, we always manage to find a way to avoid the bustle and immerse ourselves in nature – away from the noise and away from the people. This time, our path took us to the village of Gostilje, around 25 kilometers from Zlatibor town center, in search of a place often mentioned as one of the most beautiful natural wonders of the area – the Gostilje Waterfall.

A rustic village at the foot of Zlatibor
The road to Gostilje is an experience in itself. We drove past green pastures, hillside homes, plum orchards, and wide open meadows. The surroundings were peaceful – just a few sheep grazing and hills wrapped in pine and beech forests. It felt like stepping into a fairy tale illustration – untouched, tranquil, and incredibly refreshing.
This whole region abounds in water and healing herbs. Locals say the air here heals, and the water revives. And indeed, a distinct freshness wraps around you as you approach the waterfall.

A meeting with mountain nymphs and the cold waters of the Gostilje river
The path to the waterfall is well marked – you turn from the main road into a narrow street that leads to a small plateau with a restaurant and parking area. There you’ll find the entrance to the waterfall complex. There’s a symbolic entrance fee, and in return, you gain access to a true nature haven.
The Gostilje River, swift and cold, springs in the village, and just before merging into the Katušnica River, it carves its way through a 22-meter-high limestone cliff. Right there, at that very spot, the Gostilje Waterfall was born – one of the tallest natural waterfalls in Serbia.
Water crashes down forcefully from the cliff, creating not just one but an entire sequence of cascades, rapids, and whirlpools downstream. A refreshing cold shower is guaranteed – on warm days, it’s the perfect way to cool off!

A stroll along the waterfall path and a moment of peace
The entire area is beautifully arranged. Walking trails lead you alongside the cascades, with benches placed for resting, a children’s playground, and wooden bridges that cross the stream. Each step reveals a new scene – moss-covered rocks, light dancing on the water, and the scent of fresh spring vegetation.
We continued walking along the river, following its course through the forest. Eventually, we reached the calm part of the Katušnica River, where the water no longer babbles but turns into a quiet mirror reflecting nature.
For those who prefer a little more comfort, right next to the entrance is the restaurant “Gostiljska vrela,” styled in traditional ethno decor, with terraces overlooking the river. On the menu – trout from a nearby fishpond, homemade bread, and traditional local specialties. It’s the perfect place for lunch in nature, and there’s also a mini zoo and a playground for children.

An ideal spot for a family day out
This trip is tailor-made for families – effortless, pleasant, educational, and relaxing. The trails are easy to walk, kids can run around and explore, and nature has something for everyone – peace, energy, silence, or refreshment.
We visited in spring, when the waterfall is at its most powerful – full of water and force. Still, I believe neither summer nor autumn could take away its beauty. And even in winter, when it freezes into an icy sculpture, it remains equally impressive.

We’ve visited the Gostilje Waterfall multiple times, in different seasons – in spring, when it’s at its most powerful and full of water; in summer, when it offers the perfect refreshment; and even in winter, when the frozen cascades transform into magical crystal sculptures. Each season brings its own unique scenery and atmosphere, which is why we always love coming back. In the photos I’m sharing below, you can see how nature changes the face of this waterfall throughout the year – from the lush energy of spring to the almost fairy-tale-like winter landscape.

How to get there
The Gostilje Waterfall is located in the village of Gostilje, about 25 km from Zlatibor town center. The village is 30 km from Užice and around 250 km from Belgrade.
From Užice, drive toward Sirogojno (via Bela Zemlja), then follow the signs for Gostilje. A gravel but accessible road leads directly to the waterfall.
