Waterfalls Skakalo and Skakavci – Hidden natural gems near Divčibare
The Valjevo region, with its Maljen and Povlen mountains, has long been familiar terrain for us. We have explored these areas multiple times, and thanks to their gentle nature and stunning landscapes, they are always on our list of recommended places for a relaxing weekend in nature. So far, easy trails, wide viewpoints, and vast spaces for long walks have been our main reason for visiting, but this time, we decided to discover its wilder side.
We are still near one of the most popular tourist destinations in this region—Divčibare. However, instead of the well-known trails, we chose something a bit different. Our goal was to visit two waterfalls—natural treasures that often remain overshadowed by more famous locations but are certainly worth attention.
We frequently visit Divčibare and have experienced it in all seasons—from snowy landscapes to spring’s awakening of nature. Now, it was time to expand our exploration and see what lies just beyond the familiar paths.
Skakalo Waterfall
When I think of this region, the first thing that comes to mind is the sound of flowing water—wherever you turn, you can hear water tumbling over rocks. The Crna River, Crna Kamenica, and Manastirica are all worth visiting and deserve their own stories, but this time, our focus is on Skakalo Waterfall.
Hidden beneath dense treetops, Skakalo Waterfall is located on the Manastirica River, on Mount Maljen, near Divčibare. During periods of high water levels—after heavy rain or in spring when the snow begins to melt from the surrounding peaks—the waterfall dominates the landscape, and the roar of water plunging from 30 meters high echoes through the forest. Skakalo is actually a complex of waterfalls with three prominent cascades.

It is known for being located in rough terrain, and this should be taken seriously. The approach to the waterfall is steep and lacks safety measures, making movement quite difficult, especially if the ground is wet or covered in snow. For the more adventurous, following the course of the Manastirica River reveals numerous smaller waterfalls and cascades.
We visited in the summer when the waterfall had less water, but it was no less impressive.
The waterfall is close to the main road leading to Divčibare, and when vegetation is dense, the trailhead can be hard to find. Although the path is marked, it is not secured and is not recommended if you are not in good physical condition or confident on challenging terrain.
If that’s the case, a better recommendation would be to visit the Skakavci Waterfall, which is easily accessible, even for families with young children.

Skakavci Waterfall
This waterfall is located on more accessible terrain and is accompanied by a partially developed picnic area with benches and fresh drinking water fountains.
Two waterfalls with similar names but quite different characteristics. Both are named after the way water “jumps” over the rocks.
The waterfall is in the village of Skakavci, at an altitude of 600 meters. The village and the waterfall are situated on the southern side of Mount Maljen, at the foot of Divčibare, surrounded by beech and pine forests. Skakavci Waterfall is 15 meters high and is found on the Kamešina River.
During our visit, we saw several locals coming to collect water from the nearby fountains, and later, I found out that this water is believed to have healing properties. Additionally, the village has a borehole with thermal water.

How to Get There
Both waterfalls are located in the Valjevo region, on Mount Maljen or its slopes.
Skakalo and Skakavci waterfalls are easily accessible from Divčibare but can also be part of a day trip, as they are about 40 km from Valjevo and 100 km from Belgrade.
To reach Skakalo Waterfall, take the Valjevo – Mionica – Divčibare highway. The trailhead is right off the highway, near a roadside expansion with a fountain where you can park your car and continue on foot. There is a sign for the waterfall on the highway, and tree markings are visible along the route.
As mentioned, the trail is steep and can be slippery due to fallen leaves or after rain. Caution is necessary, as there are no handrails for support. If you have no experience hiking on such terrain, it’s recommended not to go alone but rather with a guide.
Skakavci Waterfall is located in the village of Skakavci, about 22 km from Divčibare, towards Kosjerić. After leaving the town of Ražana, turn left at the sign pointing towards the village and the Skakavci Waterfall. You can drive directly to the waterfall, but there’s no need—you might as well stretch your legs and enjoy the scenic walk along the paved road.
